Wajir Municipality is the major commercial hub serving the local area within Wajir County. It is located in the Central Division of Wajir East District. It is the county headquarter and serves as both administrative and civic centre.
The Municipality is centrally located and radially connected to the major towns such as Habaswein, Griftu, Eldas, Tarbaj, Bute, Buna, Hadado, Diff, and Wajir Bor. It is therefore important to promote trade and investment, capacity development, provision of infrastructure and services in the entire county.
Wajir Municipality is strategically located in Kenya with linkages to Ethiopia and Somalia thus act as commercial hub and a major a gateway to Kenya and beyond. This places the municipality at an opportune position as a commercial centre with great potential. Wajir Municipality takes pride in its international airport, which offers a national and global advantage by connecting the municipality to cities such as Nairobi, Mogadishu, and Addis Ababa, among others.
The upgrading of the Isiolo–Wajir–Mandera road to bitumen standard will greatly improve transportation networks within and beyond Wajir Municipality, thereby enhancing linkage with the LAPSSET Corridor, which seeks to integrate road and railway transport systems in the country to provide connectivity to areas such as Lamu, Isiolo, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.
The location of Wajir Municipality is currently served by daily flights from Nairobi, making it a major commercial hub and transportation corridor.
