Wajir County News 27th sep 2024,

On Friday, His Excellency Ahmed Abdullahi, Governor of Wajir and Vice-Chairperson of the Council of Governors, delivered a keynote speech at the launch of the Watoto na Mazingira program, organized by Save the Children International.

The event, themed ‘Championing a Better Future for Children and the Planet,’ aimed to highlight the urgent connection between the climate crisis and child rights.

In his remarks at the Movenpick Hotel in Westlands Nairobi, Abdullahi emphasized the critical link between children’s well-being and environmental sustainability, particularly as climate change increasingly affects vulnerable communities.

Highlighting the potential of devolution, Abdullahi shared how counties are innovating and localizing climate action strategies to meet community-specific needs. He called for inclusive conversations about climate change, stressing the importance of amplifying children’s voices through initiatives like the Children’s Devolution Conferences.

Governor Abdullahi outlined key strategies for county governments, including ensuring access to clean water in schools, integrating climate education into the curriculum, and incorporating child-specific interventions in disaster management policies. He underscored the necessity for collaboration between National and County Governments to ensure that no one is left behind in the fight against climate change.

Governor Abdullahi urged all stakeholders to support county efforts, affirming that the Watoto na Mazingira program is just the beginning of a broader movement to safeguard children’s rights and create a thriving future for Kenya’s next generations.

The event also unveiled Save the Children’s strategic direction for 2025-2027, which aligns with their global ambitions for three key breakthroughs by 2030: ensuring no child dies from preventable causes before their fifth birthday (Survive); guaranteeing all children receive a quality basic education (Learn); and eradicating violence against children (Be Protected).

END.
