The Wajir Model Farm symbolizes agricultural advancement in the region.

Wajir County, 3rd june 2024

In a significant move to bolster agricultural productivity and innovation, Mr. Farah Saman, the outgoing County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Livestock, and Veterinary Services, alongside Mr. Hussein Mohamed Olow, Chief Officer for Agriculture, Crop Farming and Irrigation Services, visited the Wajir Model Farm and Research Development Centre.

The Wajir Model Farm stands out as a beacon of agricultural advancement in the region, cultivating a variety of crops including maize, melons, dwarf pawpaws, grafted mangoes, pixie oranges, lemons, guavas, spinach, chilies, Sukuma wiki and tomatoes.

The primary goal of this project is to enhance farm productivity through the demonstration of innovative farming methods.

“We welcome this initiative by the Wajir Model Farm and Research Center. It aids in determining soil suitability for growing various crops, testing water quality and serving as an educational hub for our farmers,” said CECM for Agriculture, Farah Saman.

As evidenced here, crops such as maize, watermelon, pepper and Sukuma wiki have flourished. Our department will support such farms to ensure they reach their full potential and we will utilise this knowledge to help other farmers identify suitable crops and the optimal soil types for their growth, he added.

The research centre has made significant strides, providing support to 12 farm groups spread across Griftu, Arbajahan, Makoror, and Shalete. These groups have received essential farm inputs, seeds, fencing, water tanks and solar systems to aid in their agricultural endeavours.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Development Concern Initiative (DCI), is located at the four-mile marker on Wayax Road.
