Wajir County played host to the 4th edition of the Pastoral Leadership Summit, which took place from December 8th to 11th, 2024. The event brought together leaders from over 15 pastoral counties, development partners, and key officials from the National Government. The summit, which was a significant gathering for discussing matters pertinent to pastoral communities, concluded with the presence of H.E. William Ruto, the President of the Republic of Kenya, who officially closed the event.
In his address, Wajir Governor H.E. Ahmed Abdullahi, who also serves as the Chair of the Council of Governors, expressed his deep appreciation to all the participants for dedicating three days to the summit. He highlighted the importance of the event in not only advancing pastoral leadership but also in showcasing Wajir County’s capacity to host such a large-scale conference. Governor Abdullahi noted that the summit has had a positive economic impact on the region, boosting local businesses and tourism.
During the summit, several key outcomes were announced. One of the most significant developments was the presidential directive to establish a Livestock Management Board, aimed at addressing challenges faced by pastoralists and improving livestock trade and management across the country. Additionally, the completion of the Garissa-Wajir-Mandera road, a vital infrastructure project, was highlighted as a major step towards enhancing connectivity and accessibility in the region.
Another notable achievement discussed during the summit was the progress in the construction and equipping of the upcoming Wajir County Teaching and Referral Hospital, which is set to improve healthcare services for the local population and beyond.
The Pastoral Leadership Summit served as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and actionable solutions to the challenges facing pastoral communities, reinforcing the government’s commitment to supporting this vital sector.
